Objective:
History of the discipline
Computer science (Computing Engineering) is the study of the theoretical foundations of information, computation, their implementation, and application in computer systems. Computer science has many sub-fields; some emphasize the computation of specific results (such as computer graphics), while others relate to properties of computational problems (such as computational complexity theory). Still others focus on the challenges in implementing computations. For example, programming language theory studies approaches to describing computations, while computer programming applies specific programming languages to solve specific computational problems. A further subfield, human-computer interaction, focuses on the challenges in making computers and computations useful, usable and universally accessible to people. Computer era was started in early 1950s. The technological advancement has given it the right shape. We have seen the development from large ENIAC to small Palmtops and the progress in going on.

Present Status at National and International Level
In a developing country like India Computer Software is the one of the largest economic activity. The amount of money and job created by this industry is more comparable to other industries. Automation of Banks, Online shopping and e-learning are few successful implementation examples where national software firm have taken up over their international counterparts. Major IT industries are having their offshore development centre in India. Many of the industry experts say that if you don’t have a development centre in India, you are not doing the business seriously. Many Indian companies like InfoSys, Wipro, TCS etc. are shining globally and making the mark.

AIEEE

What Is AIEEE?

This is an engineering exam specifically for those planning to enter certain colleges and institutes in India. The letters stand for All India Engineering Entrance Examination (AIEEE). The fields of study for which the AIEEE is used are engineering, architecture, planning and pharmacy. Under the auspices of the Central Board of Secondary Education, the Department of Secondary and Higher Education (Ministry of Human Resource Development) AIEEE includes what the agency calls a “centralized counseling system.”
aieee1This particular exam is a bit different from some that students may be familiar with, simply because the AIEEE includes a paper on physics, chemistry and mathematics, and the second part on mathematics, aptitude and drawing. There are also questions given with four possible answer (multiple choice). The government agency in India that is responsible for conducting AIEEE testing emphasizes that those who cannot make a scheduled exam date will not be able to take the exam on another date.
Since the exam is based in India and is supervised by the nation’s government and its agencies, the AIEEE program is offered in English or Hindi. This choice must be stated on the individual’s application form and cannot be changed. The qualifications for taking the exam include the following instructions from the Central Board: “The minimum academicqualification for admission through AIEEE 2009 is a pass in the final examination of 10+2 (Class XII) or its equivalent referred to as the qualifying examination. Those appearing in 10+2 (Class XII) final or equivalent examination may also appear in AIEEE 2009 for consideration of provisional admission.” Anyone considering the AIEEE should be sure to understand any additional restrictions and guidelines as to who may take the test.
There are also some specific age and birth date restrictions that students should check into. Candidates for AIEEE must have been born on or after Oct. 1, 1984, though there are a few special conditions that will allow someone to take the exam if they were born on or after Oct. 1, 1979. These conditions and details are available on various exam Web sites and in printed material related to the exam.
Those individuals scheduled to take the exam are sent an admission card about one month before the dates of the test. The exam candidate is responsible for contacting the governing board if the card does not arrive by regular postal service by the set date. One of the keys to success on the AIEEE, according to the board and to those who have taken the exam is to prepare by becoming familiar with the test booklet and answer sheet. This is said to eliminate any surprises on the day of the exam. Once the testing is complete, the results are sent to the individual candidates. Scoring reports include specifics about the type of test taken and scores for each subject or section.
According to the Web site, the results will be sent to candidates on score cards in the last two weeks of June (for the exam just completed this spring, for example). If there are identical scores on any section, the older candidates receive preference.

CAREER IN ENGINEERING

Career prospects after engineering

Job prospects for engineering graduates have always been good. Candidates can either join the private sector, public sector or the government. In the government sector, engineers can appear for the "Indian Engineering Services" exam conducted by the UPSC at the national level or join various departments at the state level through their respective exams. The armed forces also induct a number of engineering graduates every year. Other departments such as the civil aviation department also recruit engineers. Engineers can also join the Merchant Navy. Due to the huge potential for infrastructure development, there is a good demand for engineers. With liberalization of the economy and opening of new companies and sectors, an engineering graduate has a myriad of options to start his career.

Job opportunities in Private Sector

Around the time of independence, most of the jobs for engineers were in the government. Initial period of post-independence period witnessed the creation of the public sector wherein large industrial organizations were set up offering employment opportunities to engineers in large numbers. Infrastructure development was also in the government domain. Working in the government controlled sector implied a permanent job with the same employer for the entire working career. Lateral entry at senior levels was limited and so also mobility as a result thereof. Promotions were based on seniority. Retrenchments and layoff were rare, if at all.

In recent years, the private sector has been developing at a fast rate. Public sector as well as infrastructure activities are being opened to the private sector for investment. In the years to come, private sector employment of engineers will expand further and, due to disinvestment and privatizations, employment currently in the government controlled sector will also shift, at least partially, to the private sector.

Higher Studies in Engineering

A lot of engineering graduates opt a career in management or go for advanced courses to further specialize in respective careers. A Ph.D. in Engineering Management combines scientific research with infield assessment and evaluation. You will study math and science learning about mechanics or operating production equipment, containing cost and assessing risks. The Doctor of Engineering program involves the preparation and submission of material related to achievements as a professional engineer.

Engineering Management programs or courses are recent developments in response to the demand from industry. Engineering managers occupy a unique position in their industry. They combine their management expertise with engineering knowledge to lead teams of specialists in highly technical tasks. Most engineering managers focus on product development, materials management, production processes, and workforce reliability. However, Management engineers must also possess strong communication skills.
